Wolves midfielder Joao Moutinho has reportedly agreed to sign a fresh 12-month contract at Molineux, having previously stalled negotiations in pursuit of a longer deal.

Sportsmail reported last week that the Portuguese international initially stalled the offer in a bid to land a two-year deal at the club.

Bruno Lage's side are reportedly delighted to retain one of their crucial first-team players for another season, having yet to make a serious signing so far this summer.

Moutinho will now fly back to England to return to first-team training on Wednesday, according to the Telegraph.

Since his £5million arrival from Monaco in July 2018, the experienced midfielder has helped Wolves secure three top-half finishes in four seasons in the Premier League.

During that period, Moutinho has managed five goals and 23 assists in 176 appearances at the club.

Speaking in April, Lage said: ‘It’s hard to find men like him. He wants to stay.

'The club wants him and I am very happy working with him.’

Wolves star Ruben Neves, who has returned to pre-season training alongside Lage, was expected to exit Molineux this summer for a sizeable fee amid interest from Manchester United and Barcelona.

However, as it stands, the 25-year-old is set to play in midfield alongside his Portuguese compatriot Moutinho ahead of next season.
