Rennes midfielder Nemanja Matić is considering hanging up his boots amid his extraordinary stand-off with Les Rouge et Noir. The Serbian is expected to leave Brittany only five months after his arrival on a €2m switch from AS Roma.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea player is frustrated by what he perceived as unkept promises by the club’s executives regarding his children’s education. Matić was reportedly told his three children would be enrolled in an international school. However, no such school exists in Rennes.

Besides, Rennes’ struggles this Ligue 1 season and the sacking of manager Bruno Genesio have convinced Matić his time in Brittany may already be up. The three-times Premier League League winner with Chelsea emptied his locker on Tuesday. Matić also left Rennes altogether. He and his family were spotted boarding a high-speed train at Rennes’ central station. Get French Football News understand the train was headed for Paris.

Ouest-France adds that Matic might travel to London, where his family has retained a home. The outlet understands that the former Serbia international has grown frustrated, so much so that an early retirement is being considered. L’Equipe confirm as well that Matić may have played his final career game with Les Bretons. It would be a 0-0 stalemate against Ligue 1 opposition Toulouse on December 17th.
