Neville names his BIZARRE England XI, with TAA kept in, Foden's position changed

Gary Neville has made a few puzzling tactical selections as he named his England starting XI.

The Three Lions have already qualified for the knockout phase of Euro 2024, but will look to finish top of Group C when they face Slovenia in Cologne tonight.

Gareth Southgate is set to make just one change for the game, with Conor Gallagher coming in for Trent Alexander-Arnold after the Liverpool right-back struggled to adapt to the experiment of him playing in midfield.

Neville though feels that the England boss should make bigger changes despite only dropping one player - not Trent Alexander-Arnold from the side that drew 1-1 with Denmark.

Kieran Trippier is the player he feels should be dropped from the starting XI, but a number of players switch to different positions.

However, he struggled to select his line-up and decided to change his original team up.

In his final selection, he opted to switch Bukayo Saka to the left and Phil Foden to the right side of attack - despite the fact that the Arsenal star 'won't be happy'.

He said: 'Tweaking the formation to put Foden right and Saka on the left can help.

'They also have the ability to interchange. It’s not ideal. Saka won’t be one hundred per cent happy. But, on balance, he’s a player with more directness to his game, whereas Foden will always like to play across the front line.

'Saka is left footed which gives you that option to switch the ball out there wide, even with a right-footed full back. Foden is left footed too but less likely to stick wide.'

He initially picked a 3-4-2-1 formation which included a back three of Kyle Walker, John Stones and Marc Guehi.

Then he would have Alexander-Arnold and Saka - on the left- as wing-backs with Declan Rice and Kobbie Mainoo in the centre.

Foden and Jude Bellingham would then play as attacking midfielders behind Harry Kane.

He switched to a 4-2-1-3 line-up with Walker at left-back, Stones and Guehi in the centre and Alexander-Arnold on the right.

Rice would play in midfield with Mainoo, with Bellingham just ahead of the pair.

Then the front three would be the same as it is now, but with Foden on the right and Saka on the left.
