Tottenham news: The hunt for Tottenham's next manager is uncertain once again as Julian Nagelsmann is no longer in contention

For Mason, it could be something of an audition for the permanent role, feeling he knows he can do a good job in his time as interim: "First of all I know this football club, I know this football club very well and feel this club inside of me and that can help," the former midfielder said before the Aston Villa clash.

"Ultimately I hear a lot of people will naturally say about age, but it really feels irrelevant. In football it doesn't matter how many years you've had in the game, how much experience, you're being judged every single day and in every single game. That's the nature of football. It really doesn't matter how old I am or how long I've been coaching, I feel ready to help the team and the football club and that's the most important thing."

While Mason may impress with certain aspects implemented, he is currently only sixth favourite, according to Betfair, joint with Mauricio Pochettino and Graham Potter. The current favourite is former Liverpool midfielder turned Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso.

He is then followed by Feyenoord coach Arne Slot, with former Manchester City defender turned Burnley manager Vincent Kompany rounding out the top three.
