Newcastle United 0-1 Everton: Barry bags again as Moyes' men triumph at St James' Park

Everton battled to a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United as Thierno Barry's second-half goal made the difference at St James' Park.

Barry, who netted the winner in the corresponding fixture last term – which was actually Everton's last away victory in the Premier League – scored in the 49th minute.

It was nothing less than Everton deserved, though, after an accomplished display in which they were the better team from the off, while Newcastle's miserable night was capped off by Jacob Ramsey's late red card.

Merlin Rohl lashed over from a tight angle, but the breakthrough could well have arrived bang on the 23rd minute, when Jarrad Branthwaite flicked on a set-piece. Barry, though, completely missed his attempted finish.

Joelinton hammered wide from distance but Everton kept up the pressure, and the superb Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall teed up two excellent chances on the cusp of half-time.

Dewsbury-Hall delivered a teasing cross that was just out of Jake O'Brien's reach, before the playmaker set up Harrison Armstrong, who skewed wide from the centre of the area.

However, Everton's pressure told just after the restart. Tyrique George got in down the left from a free-kick, and his shot was fumbled on the slick surface by Lukas Hornicek, with Barry on hand to tap into an empty net.

Hornicek pulled off some impressive saves to deny Branthwaite, Dewsbury-Hall and O'Brien, and Newcastle almost made their goalkeeper's work count when Anthony Elanga got on the end of a deep cross, but a combination of Jordan Pickford and the post kept it out.

Fabian Schar got away with a desperate last-gasp challenge on Barry soon after, and Everton's goal lived a charmed life when Ramsey volleyed wide and Pickford kept out Yoane Wissa's strike.

But Ramsey's dismissal for two bookings in as many minutes in second-half stoppage time marked the end of Newcastle's comeback hopes.

Dewsbury-Hall delivers in Grealish's absence

Everton beat Newcastle 3-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium in the EFL Cup last week, but this was a very different kind of victory.

There was one similarity, however, with Jack Grealish once again absent from Everton's squad, having missed last week's clash with the Magpies due to an unauthorised absence from training.

But Dewsbury-Hall more than stepped up to the mark, and in a fine team display, he stood out.

Dewsbury-Hall led the game for chances created (three) and touches (75), while he topped Everton's team for shots (three, level with James Garner and Barry), passes (48) and completed passes (41).

At the back, Branthwaite, fit again after missing the last two matches with a concussion, won 10 of his 12 aerial duels. That is the joint-most a player has won in a Premier League game this season and his most won in a game in the competition.

Meanwhile, only Erling Haaland (13) has scored more goals among Premier League players in all competitions this season than Barry (eight).

Since David Moyes returned to Everton in January 2025, only Arsenal (31) and Manchester City (28) have kept more clean sheets in the Premier League than the Toffees (20), who now have a quick turnaround before facing Coventry City on Friday.

However, no Premier League side has lost more home games in 2026 than Newcastle (seven), while they have now lost 16 of their last 18 league games when conceding first (W1 D1), and Matthias Jaissle is facing some big questions.
