Porto striker Luis Diaz could be one of Newcastle's first mega-money signings following their recent takeover.

That's according to SPORT TV in Portugal, who claim that The Magpies are prepared to meet the €80m (£67.5m) release clause in the Colombia international's contract in the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old Diaz has scored 11 goals in 20 games so far this season for both club and country in all competitions and Newcastle could now turn to him to ignite their campaign.

Diaz featured against Liverpool in the Champions League for Porto in September but it was a night to forget for all concerned with the Portuguese club as Jurgen Klopp's side ran out 5-1 winners.

At present, Newcastle are managerless after sacking Steve Bruce in the week and sit 19th in the Premier League table.

Graeme Jones is at the helm in a caretaker role for Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace, amid reports Paulo Fonseco could soon be in line to replace Bruce in a permanent deal.

According to the Telegraph, Fonseca has held talks with the club with Amanda Staveley present and she has been left impressed by the Portuguese coach.

He departed Roma at the end of last season and the Italian outfit replaced him with Jose Mourinho.

Alongside Fonseca, other managers being considered for the role include Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, Lucien Favre, Eddie Howe and Rudi Garcia with a decision expected to be made next week.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has also been linked but dismissed rumours when quizzed after his side's Europa League win over Brondby.

With a relaxed smile, the Rangers boss replied: 'Do I look happy? Do I look settled? Don't ask me silly questions then.'
