Newcastle are in advanced talks to sign goalkeeper Nick Pope from Burnley following the Clarets' relegation to the Championship.

Sportsmail reported last week that the Magpies were a exploring a deal for the 30-year-old as they seek quality competition for Martin Dubravka.

Pope, who has one year left on his contract at Turf Moor, has had interest from a number of clubs but a move to Newcastle appeals.

The 6ft 6in shot-stopper is currently third choice in the England squad behind Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale and will know that he has more chance of staying in Gareth Southgate's thoughts ahead of the World Cup in the winter if he remains in the Premier League.

Despite Burnley's fall into the second tier, Pope has stood out as one of the best goalkeepers in the top-flight in recent years.

He has spent the last six seasons in Lancashire, making 155 appearances in all competitions and winning the Clarets' player of the year award on two occasions.

But the Turf Moor club are being forced into a squad clear out because their relegation means they are due to pay back a portion of a £65million loan.

Newcastle decided on a move for Pope after also considering Manchester United's Dean Henderson, Alphonse Areola and Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Eddie Howe is in the process of revamping his side with the backing of the club's Saudi Arabian owners, with talks continuing over deals for Sven Botman and Hugo Ekitike.
