Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali says a return to Serie A is likely - though not in the short-term.

The former AC Milan and Brescia midfielder is now with the Italy squad for this week's World Cup qualifiers.

Asked about whether he could return to Serie A, Tonali said: "It's difficult to answer. You never know what you want to do or what will happen. But I always tell everyone yes.

"Ultimately, an Italian always has the chance, even a 1% chance, of returning to Serie A. Maybe not now. I'm at a point where I've found my calling and everything's going well.

"But I never close the door on a return to Serie A because it's my country and my league, which is getting better and better.

"Serie A improves every year, the teams get stronger and stronger, and the technical level of Serie A improves with each transfer market."

Tonali also commented on Paul Scholes' declaration that he is currently the best midfielder in the Premier League.

He added, "I saw it, (Guglielmo) Vicario told me straight away. When compliments come from such great former players, it's very nice, you're almost surprised. It's a great feeling."
