Mike Ashley spent £113,000 on matchday hospitality as his family supported Newcastle United.

The 2018 accounts for MASH Holdings - the company that controls all of Ashley's business interests - reveal that the expenditure was up from £78,000 for the previous year.

Ashley's parents are known to be keen followers of the club their son acquired in 2007 and support the team around the country.

However, the Magpies owner has not been seen at St James' Park in recent months despite talk of him taking a closer interest in the club this season.

He has, though, admitted it will be a 'challenge' to avoid relegation from the Premier League and has warned of the consequences if they do go down. Steve Bruce's side are currently one point above the relegation zone.

'The club will have challenges to face as it looks to remain in the Premier League subsequent to the 2019-20 season,' he said in the accounts, adding that the biggest risk to income is a 'prolonged period' out of the top flight due to 'the impact on revenue streams'.

Newcastle travel to West Ham on Saturday and Bruce has been boosted by the return to training of Andy Carroll.

He missed last weekend's 1-1 draw at home to Wolves with a groin strain but the sight of the striker joining in a session on Thursday has allayed fears of the injury being more serious.
