Newcastle spoil Lampard's Everton league debut to move out of relegation zone

Newcastle United secured a crucial three points in their bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League on Tuesday evening, as they beat Frank Lampard's Everton 3-1 at St James' Park.

Although the Magpies initially went behind thanks to a Jamaal Lascelles own goal, Mason Holgate drew things level with an own goal of his own. Then, in the second half, Ryan Fraser and Kieran Trippier got on the scoresheet as Newcastle made sure of the victory.

The first goal of the game came in the 36th minute, as Anthony Gordon's deep free-kick was not dealt with. That gave Holgate the chance to get a shot away, which was blocked on the line by Matt Targett but then rebounded into Lascelles, who saw it go into his own goal.

It did not take long for Lascelles to make amends, though, as his header from a corner a minute or so later came back out off the bar, hit Holgate and went in.

Newcastle were able to take the lead through Ryan Fraser in the 56th minute, as Allan Saint Maximin got to the byline and floated up a cross into the six-yard box, which Fraser then turned home to send St James' Park into a state of frenzy.

With 10 minutes to go in regulation time, Trippier scored an impressive free-kick to take the roof off St James' Park calm the nerves from a Newcastle perspective. Roughly 30 yards out from goal, Trippier sent his right-footed effort into the bottom corner of Jordan Pickford's goal before wheeling off in celebration.

Newcastle out of the relegation zone

Newcastle managed to hold on to their two-goal lead, so the significance of this result for Eddie Howe's side is that they now move up to 17th in the Premier League table, two points clear of Norwich City in 18th. Everton, meanwhile, remain in 16th.
