Nuno urges West Ham to 'keep together' after Brentford defeat

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo has called for the club to remain united as their survival hopes hang in the balance following a potentially damaging 3-0 defeat away at Brentford.

The Hammers went behind early on in the first half through a Konstantinos Mavropanos own goal, with the Greek defender then seeing a potential equaliser overturned following a VAR review.

That proved to be crucial as Brentford doubled their advantage nine minutes after the break from the penalty spot after El Hadji Malick Diouf fouled Dango Ouattara inside the area, with Igor Thiago scoring his 22nd league goal of the campaign.

Brentford scored again through Mikkel Damsgaard to put the result beyond doubt, and West Ham could now fall back inside the bottom three.

That will only occur if Tottenham win at Aston Villa on Sunday, but Nuno wants his side to remain together and only focus on their final three matches of the season.

He said to BBC Sport: "It's going to be a big challenge for all of us with the impact of this tough day.

"It's up to us how we're going to react to this. We've got three games to go, and it's going to go to the wire.

"But that's what I said to the boys: 'Let's keep together, let's realise how we react from a bad day is going to keep us alive in the fight'."

Though West Ham could only generate an xG of 0.7, they did strike the woodwork on four occasions, becoming only the fourth team to hit the woodwork at least three times in a Premier League game this season.

And Nuno was encouraged by how West Ham started the encounter.

"We played a very good first half," he said.

"We didn't achieve [a goal], we had chances with the post, and we created a lot of problems for Brentford.

"So, we were positive in the first half, but then [after they scored] the penalty in the second half, we lost a bit of composure and organisation, and it became much harder."

Brentford boss Keith Andrews was delighted with the way in which his side "found a way to win" as they moved up to sixth and ended a run of six games without a win in the league.

The Irishman told BBC Sport: "We probably haven't had what we deserved, but that's the game and the level that we're at.

"I wanted us to find a way to win, most importantly, with just a few games to go until the end of the season.

"We've had a special season so far, and I really want us to continue to do that."
