De Ligt topped the fan poll in the United App, finishing above Bruno Fernandes and Amad to win the prize for the first time since signing in July 2024.
The Netherlands international is enjoying a strong season at the heart of the Reds’ backline and appreciates the acclaim – his former Ajax and Bayern team-mate Noussair Mazraoui was the last defensive victor, 12 months ago.
“It’s obviously really nice to get the recognition from the fans, and get the award,” Matthijs said, in his exclusive interview with club media.
“I think we’re doing well. We’re improving as a team. With myself I’m also quite happy.
“I’m trying to do my job as good as possible and to get the recognition from that is always nice. I try to keep improving to help the team even more.”
His most obvious contribution was his last-gasp equaliser at Spurs, as he evaded the attention of the white-shirted defenders to nod past Guglielmo Vicario at the far post.
But Sunday’s victory at Crystal Palace, as the Reds came from behind to take all three points at Selhurst Park, is also a cherished moment.
“I have to say the win against Palace last weekend was really nice, because it was such an important win for us,” he added.
“I try to see it game by game but obviously scoring a goal as a defender is always nice.”
De Ligt’s positive November was further burnished by his international recall, as he started for the Netherlands in their 4-0 win over Lithuania that secured a spot at next summer’s World Cup.
He sees his inclusion as testament to how he's been performing in 2025/26, and wants to keep the good form going.
“I think it’s a coincidence of doing well with your club, so with that I’m really happy,” said Matthijs.
“It’s good to help the Netherlands national team. It’s always something that is really important to me, so yeah above all it was a really good month.
“Hopefully I can continue like this and, in the end, it’s all about the end of the season. Now it’s just the beginning, the start, so hopefully I can continue like that and improve even more.”

frustration is that you? we both plays number of same matches, were you forbidden to win it as well?
I understand your situation. You've been given heart break by Arsenal too many times and you're looking for whom to blame. 😂

Win the EPL and stop claiming 2nd as your trophy first. Maybe you'd have some sense then.
