Everton have captured the exciting Brazilian talent Bernard, holding off the challenge of a number of clubs at home and abroad.

The Brazilian attacker, a free agent after leaving Shakhtar Donetsk at the end of last season, has signed a four-year contract worth around £150,000-a-week.

His signing represents a coup for Everton, who fought off competition from Chelsea and West Ham as well as clubs in Italy including Inter Milan.

Tottenham were also linked with the player but hadn't made their intentions clear. He has recently been on the front page of Italian newspapers, who were already heralding his arrival in Serie A.

The player, who cost Shakhtar Donetsk £40million in 2013, can play as an inside forward coming off the left side or a No 10 behind a striker. He is believed to be looking forward to playing with countryman Richarlison and invites the prospect of a formidable partnership at Goodison Park.

Bernard told the club's official video channel: 'I chose Everton because of all the things I had heard about Marco Silva and after speaking to him I was happy with what he said to me.

'The manager made me feel confident about playing here. He is a very good coach and he has achieved really good things at other clubs.

'Everton is a club with a great structure and a lot of tradition, historically the fourth most successful club in England. When I found out about this opportunity and what the manager wanted out of me I was happy.

'That is why I made my choice, because of the confidence both the manager and the club showed inme.

'I did not need any convincing to come here. I believe I will be able to show my best as a player here.'
