Lionel Messi has been named The Best FIFA Men's Player at this year's award ceremony, the Barcelona star beating Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk and Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo to scoop the prize.
Messi sealed the victory by leading Barcelona to yet another La Liga title last campaign, his 10th since breaking through with the club.
He fired 51 goals across 50 appearances for the Catalan side, marking his 10th consecutive season with at least 40 finishes.
Many had pegged Van Dijk as the favourite to win the honour of this year's best player, as the Dutch defender had anchored a Liverpool backline widely considered the world's best.

for those who say van dijk deserve it, am with you, but for those who say Ronaldo deserve it, let me tell you, is Ronald even in the discussion in the beginning, not even close, just because you performed in latter part of the season doesn't mean you deserve it, it has to be season long performance, consistency all season long, just because you score a hattrick in one crucial match doesn't mean you are the best all season long....it should be van dijk....but if not it should be leo....this is not a team award...the team are already rewarded with their trophy...this is individual performance....and both plays to score a goals...Messi 50 out of 51 appearance....tell me how many from Ronaldo

I’m Ronaldo and Messi fan. But I personally think Ronaldo deserved to win it. Messi only won one throphy ... and the golden boot. He played like a God all season yes. But Ronaldo internationally won a trophy for country for 2nd time also MVP in seria A season. Seria A tittle and another throphy. He also played like a God. In difficult times like always he rescued Juve... against atletico was his best moment. What was messi’s best moment? The goals... that’s all Ronaldo should’ve won. Vvd is a joke.. Ramos played well for many seasons and never even got as close as vvd to win the best. These Cr7 fans are so dumb.I hear u ranting that CR7 deserve it last year.let me make this clear for u to understand.Last season RM was way below par and him Cr7 too.He scored in every match of the group stage yes and they lost some of those matches.When it came to the business end he disappeared in the semis and the finals.His only achievement was top scorer in the cL.They lost the league to Barca with a 18 points difference.Messi was top scorer and assst in the whole of Europe and he won the double.Both of them had the World Cup to make up for their season and edge for the ballon d’or.But unfortunately they were eliminated from the WC on the same day.Modric on the other hand was so instrumental as a midfielder for RM CL win.So alrdy he was par with CR7 after the CL.Then he goes on to be the best player in the World Cup.So hw come u wanted Cr7 to get the price over him jst because he scored in the group stages of the CL.Benzema stole the show in the semis of the CL and bale did same in the Finals.Thats were Cr7 lost the award and he himself knew that,that’s why he wasn’t happy on the day of the finals becoz he didn’t score.I said it on that day of the finals that as he didn’t score he wouldn’t be favourite to win the ballon d’or.Most RM or maybe Juv fans u watch football but u don’t even see wats happening.Cr7 looks has blinded u guys.

With all due respect Ronaldo and vvd ware all deserving to the award but the fact is that Ronaldo was obviously robbed last year with Luca modric scooping the award away. Messi had a bad season individually even though he had a domestic double with golden boot. Ronaldo had a spectacular season with goals and trophies but unfortunately he was robbed. Vvd had a great season but he needs to prove himself for another season or more which he has started but obviously even though there was disappointing times for Messi, even football fan felt his presence in almost every game with the things he was doing.

Whoever says Messi doesn’t deserve the Award is clueless about what football really is. We are talking about the overall best player. We are not talking about best team. For few years Messi deserved best player like today but he unfortunately lost it to Ronaldo because Ronaldo was winning UCL with Real Madrid with great players! Does it means Messi would die if his team are not good enough to help him win a trophy? Come on, it’s an individual award not for a team. If you win a trophy, you must have a great impact or be influential in the tournament to deserve world best player just like a “Man of the match.” In every game puts in much effort. Sometimes the best player comes from the losers. This is to show people that even with poor squad, you can be singled out as a best player if you deserve it.
