Sheffield Wednesday have named Steve Bruce as their new manager from February 1, with his coaching assistants Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence taking temporary charge.
Bruce promised to spend Christmas and New Year with family after a traumatic year when he lost both his mum and dad, and will take up the role after a pre-planned holiday.
The vastly-experienced Bruce had been Wednesday's top target to succeed Jos Luhukay following the Dutchman's sacking last month after just under a year in charge at Hillsborough.
Sheffield Wednesday were aware of this from earliest stage of negotiations of his holiday but were determined to get Bruce so they accommodated his wishes.
Bruce has won four promotions from the Championship - with Hull in 2013 and 2016, and Birmingham in 2002 and 2008.
The Owls will be a 10th managerial appointment for the 58-year-old, who was most recently Aston Villa boss until his sacking in October.
He takes over a club currently sitting 16th in the Championship, 10 points above the relegation zone after a disappointing start to the campaign.
The club are also undergoing some off-field change, as owner Dejphon Chansiri has said he will sell the club should he receive a suitable offer but his asking price is understood to be prohibitive.

He lost his mum and dad recently and wanted to spend time with his family. Fair enough! Family comes first and Wednesday respected his stance
Because he wants to work but recently lost his mum and dad. Sheffield Wednesday said they would wait as they approached him dufus

This biggest shock here is 20 years since Manager at Utd. Let that sink in 20 years ago, how time flys, it's doesn't seem that long ago he was a player.

He's the only person in the whole universe who Wednesday wanted. Steve Bruce the Oracle could have told them to wait until his missus adopted an orphan, and they would've waited.

He keeps getting the jobs despite failing everywhere he goes ......What's he's secret not football management that's for certain

And you'll get other old failed managers and tv pundits moaning about the lack of chances given to young English managers. Failed, sacked, next club repeat

Strange how they show no ambition to catch their more illustrious neighbours. Doomed to more years of failure.

Being a bit harsh on Brucey. He loves his holidays, who remembers those beach photos.

They better be paying him from his first day in the job not from now. Although with the clowns involved in this sport wouldn't be surprised. You'd think he'd get stuck in right away

He needs more time to get over getting snubbed by United.

Bruce was due to start sooner though put "threre or therabouts" in his sat nav and ended up in the peak district drinking pints and smashing mixed meat with Elmohamady and Mile Jedinak.

Commitment to the cause. Let's hope his players don't decide they want a month off mid season.

Oh, and by the way, his 4 promotions followed relegations. Probably a nice man and decent, but way out of his depth at AV.

Good luck Steve Bruce. Make up for scoring that Fergie time goal , every Wednesday fan remembers that one !

If it doesn't go his way by the end of the season he will walk away like most of the club's he has managed.

The team is 7 points off the relegation zone and might be in there by 8 weeks. Hats off for negotiating this job.

I'm a Villa fan. I like Bruce as a man and I think he's an ok football manager. But, he's not interested in anything but cash now, and his style of football is antiquated. He wants January off cos he doesn't want the stress of buying players. He'll take SW money and he will be sacked by 2021.

Nothing to do with losing his deposit. More the fact he's had a traumatic year both professionally and personally

Funny thing is, that holiday has probably been funded by his latest payoff from his last failed managerial role. The football management carousel is one that my bank account wishes I was on!

Unlucky Sheffield Wednesday appointing a 1990s manager approaching 2020.You should have put an enquiry in for Jose.

How does he continue to get jobs? His stats are terrible and he's walked away from every job he's had when it's got to hard him.

I can't say that Bruce deserves this to be honest. I know the situation at Villa was less than perfect but he has shown his limitations at a number of clubs now. Both Sheffield clubs appear to be coming out of the doldrums and this looks like a poor appointment that could really hamper Wednesday's progress. If I were a Wednesday fan I'd be disappointed.

Time will tell but he is a fake manager, never at the training ground, no coaching, no plan, players out of position and not really interested in players under 28. I like Staff Wed but this bloke will put you back at least five years

Shows how passionate he is for the job that he would rather go on holiday than getting stuck into his new job, which he will be handsomely paid. And yet it's the footballers attitude that keeps getting questioned. Only in football can you be a certified failure, safe in the knowledge that you will be sacked and paid generously, and then have another job to go to...after you've had your holidays.

No need for him to be dedicated to the club. He knows give it a year or two he will be sacked then repeat at next club.....

His last club as a player and first as a manager was Sheffield United. Like other clubs he abandoned ship when the money dried up. Meanwhile, we have a manager given a go from the lower leagues who has us third in the same division on a budget of peanuts. Why do clubs still buy into the names rather than get the new talent in? Well done our board for Wilder AND West Brom for Moore, two quality managers.
