On this day in 2004, Wayne Rooney made his Manchester United debut and scored a hat-trick vs. Fenerbahce in the Champions League.

After breaking through at Everton, Sir Alex Ferguson decided to pay a then-record amount for 18-year-old Rooney of £25m in 2004.

Many deemed it far too much for a player so young – it took Rooney all of 54 minutes to make it look like pocket change.

Playing Fenerbahce in the Champions League, the young forward netted an incredible hat-trick in a 6-2 victory.
