Martin Odegaard hailed Declan Rice’s “unbelievable” performance as a makeshift right-back in Arsenal's 2-1 win over Brighton, which kept them at the Premier League summit.
Jurrien Timber missed out due to an ankle problem, joining Ben White on the sidelines, while Riccardo Califiori was forced to pull out moments before kick-off after suffering an injury in the warm-up.
Rice, who has widely been seen as one of the best midfield performers in the league this season, filled in admirably at full-back and could be required in that position again when Arsenal host their surprise title rivals Aston Villa on Tuesday.
Odegaard, who set the Gunners on their way with a fine strike in the first half against Brighton, spoke glowingly of the 26-year-old’s versatility and what it shows about the tenacity of the Arsenal squad.
“It was an unbelievable performance from him," said Odegaard.
"To play right-back, probably the first time in his life, and then do it the way he did it today was unbelievable, so a really, really good performance from him.
"And that's just our team. Everyone is ready to do whatever it takes, and that was another good example of that."
Odegaard’s goal was his first of the season, and first since netting against Southampton in May, with the Norwegian pleased to end his drought in front of goal.
He said: "I've been waiting for that one and working really hard to improve on my finishing.
"I like to be in those areas, and Bukayo, we know each other really well, he finds me there, and there was a little angle in the corner there, so it was a good goal.
“As I said, we've been working really hard to get it, and it was there, so we're really pleased."
