Oldham are set to hire Harry Kewell as manager as a replacement for sacked boss Dino Maamria.
Maamria was relieved of his duties late on Friday evening after 11 months in charge at Boundary Park, having led the Latics to 19th place in League Two before the coronavirus pandemic halted the season.
And Sportsmail understands Oldham are set to move for former Liverpool and Leeds United winger Kewell as Maamria's successor.
The Boundary Park role would be the 41-year-old's third role in charge of a Football League club, having had short-term stints in charge of Crawley Town and Notts County in 2017 and 2018.
Kewell led Crawley to a 14th-placed finish in League Two in the 2017-18 season before being snapped up by Notts County during the summer of 2018.
But the Australian lasted only 14 games at Meadow Lane and was sacked in November 2018 and the Nottingham club would go on to be relegated the following May.
Kewell has also held a coaching role in Watford's youth set-up, where he was manager of the under-21s side between 2015 and 2017.
During his playing days, the Australian came through the youth ranks of Leeds United and would go on to make 181 Premier League appearances for the Whites between 1996 and 2003.
Kewell then joined Liverpool for £5million in 2003 and was part of the Reds squad that won the 2005 Champions League title and the 2006 FA Cup.
After nearly 100 appearances for the Anfield club, Kewell then joined Galatasaray before ending his playing career in his native Australia via a brief short-term stint in Qatar.
He was also capped 58 times by Australia and represented them in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.
Maamria became Oldham's fifth manager in 12 months when he replaced Laurent Banide last September.
Frankie Bunn, Pete Wild, Paul Scholes and Banide - a former Monaco manager - all managed Oldham in the 12 months preceding Maamria's appointment.
A club statement read on Friday evening: 'Dino Maamria has today departed the club from his role as a head coach of Oldham Athletic, together with his team.
'We would like to place our appreciation on record to Dino for his hard work and dedication. We also wish Dino all the best for his future endeavours.'
