Owen: Sesko is not Man Utd's future, Carrick can recall Rashford

Manchester United legend Michael Owen has expressed concerns about Sesko's future at Manchester United, while Carrick faces transfer dilemmas.

Benjamin Sesko is set to have a crucial season in his Manchester United career, with Carrick's team having returned to the Champions League. The 23-year-old joined from RB Leipzig last summer for a transfer fee of up to £74 million, scoring 11 goals in his debut season. After Slovenia missed out on the World Cup, Sesko had hoped to use the full summer pre-season to get into shape quickly, but his pre-season preparations have been affected by injury.

Sesko has not played a minute in matches this summer and is still recovering from a persistent injury sustained against Liverpool at the end of last season. Initially, the injury was not thought to be serious, but it has now prevented him from playing and participating in pre-season training.

However, former Manchester United striker Michael Owen believes that concerns about Sesko extend far beyond his current injury. The Premier League champion has questioned the Slovenian striker's ability to lead the line. In an interview with the Daily Star, Owen expressed his concerns about Sesko's long-term potential.

Owen said: "Manchester United don't have many options at center-forward, so Sesko is currently the main man to wear that shirt. He performed well towards the end of last season, so he will start the new season as a regular. But I don't think he is Manchester United's long-term future, though with the Champions League returning to Old Trafford and more games, it's important that he can play and score goals."

Owen added that while there are limited options in the market at the moment, Carrick could recall Rashford, who has been away from the club for 18 months. Rashford will wear the number 14 shirt next season, and Barcelona declined the opportunity to sign the 28-year-old for £26 million, with transfer interest yet to materialize.

Owen continued: "This requires other players to contribute goals, and a decision on Rashford must be made quickly, because Carrick is exactly the kind of perfect manager who can put his arm around Marcus's shoulder and get him to give his all for Manchester United."

Rashford missed Manchester United's friendly against Leeds United in Dublin on Wednesday evening, with Carrick stating that Rashford, Mainoo, and Lisandro Martinez were given more recovery time after the World Cup. The England international traveled with the squad to Croke Park but was not included in the matchday squad, and he may return in Saturday's game against Milan.
