PL clubs to reject idea of limiting number of foreign players ahead of Brexit

Premier League clubs are expected to vote against proposals to limit the number of foreigners in their squads ahead of Brexit.

The Football Association had proposed a reduction in the number of overseas players in each 25-man squad from 17 to 12.

However, that has been met with opposition by the majority of clubs who believe it will be to the detriment of the Premier League spectacle and brand.

Currently, 13 clubs have more than 12 overseas players in their squads with Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham among them.

There are increasing concerns about how clubs continue player recruitment once Brexit is brought in with European players no longer meeting work permit requirements.

The FA sees it as an opportunity to boost the amount of homegrown players and increase the talent pool for the national side.

They had looked to push the vote through with the incentive of giving a 'governing body endorsement' (GBE) for a work permit for every foreign player who gets a contract with a Premier League club.

The FA hoped by removing red tape that would still allow top foreign talent to come to England and maintain the Premier League's global popularity, while boosting the number of English players.

A working party has been working with Premier League clubs and academies from the summer.

Indeed, the association of sporting directors are due to hold a seminar at the London offices of law firm Squire Patton Boggs this Friday to discuss recruitment issues post-Brexit.

The session is to include talks from legal experts and how clubs will need to change their strategies for bringing in new players.
