PLAYER RATINGS: Harry Maguire has a night to forget but Jude Bellingham shines at Wembley

England and Germany played out a thrilling 3-3 draw to finish their Nations League campaigns at Wembley on Monday night.

The visitors went two goals up early in the second half through an Ilkay Gundogan penalty and a fine Kai Havertz strike but England hit back in stunning fashion as quick-fire goals from Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and a Harry Kane penalty put Gareth Southgate's men 3-2 up.

However, a late Nick Pope error allowed Havertz to pounce for his second of the game to rescue a point for Germany, which ensured that England will enter this year's World Cup without a win in their last six matches.

Sportsmail's Dominic King rated the players from both sides at Wembley.

ENGLAND (3-4-2-1)

Nick Pope – Not much he could have done with Germany's first two goals but the third one will haunt him for the rest of the week – 5

John Stones – A couple of loose passes but the main issue was the injury that ended his night in the first half; it didn't look good – 5

Eric Dier – Best of the back three but that isn't exactly a compliment; became more jittery as the game wore on – 5.5

Harry Maguire – Booed when his name was read out, conceded the penalty and then dispossessed for the second goal; it was uncomfortable to watch – 4

Reece James – His game is defined by drive and power but played within himself for long parts until coming to life in the last 30 minutes – 6.5

Jude Bellingham – Appropriate he won the penalty for England's third goal; plays like a veteran and he never stopped trying to drag his team forward – 8

Declan Rice – Had his pocket-picked a couple of times and, like so many, is suffering from a shortage of confidence and a loss of form – 6

Luke Shaw – Wonderful ball should have created a goal for Sterling, bundled in the strike that gave hope. Certain to start against Iran – 7

Raheem Sterling – International football is defined by taking the few chances that come your way; he fluffed his two big moments – 5

Phil Foden – Didn't get enough opportunities to cause the mischief that he does for Manchester City and was substituted – 6

Harry Kane – Barely had a sight of goal until he stepped up to thrash in a nerveless penalty; glorious pass to Saka, too – 7

SUBS

Walker (for Stones 37mins) 6

Mount (for Sterling 66mins) 7

Saka (for Foden 66mins) 7

MANAGER

Gareth Southgate – Not all his decisions worked but the substitutions in the 66th minute absolutely did and, for that, he deserves credit.

Very emotional, understandably, when England took the lead – 7

GERMANY (4-2-3-1)

Marc-Andre ter-Stegen – Quality doesn't drop when Germany play their second choice keeper, as super saves from Sterling and Saka showed – 7

Thilo Kehrer – West Ham's new signing was given plenty to think about trying to contain Luke Shaw and Raheem Sterling – 6

Niklas Sule – He's as big as a boat and looked cumbersome when Sterling dashed at him with his dancing feet – 6

Nico Schlotterbeck – Only playing as Antonio Rudiger was suspended and his leaden evening was illustrated by his stupid lunge on Bellingham – 5

David Raum – Willing outlet down the left, had impressed against Hungary on Friday and kept James occupied when he dashed forward – 6

Ilkay Gundogan – Neat and tidy with his possession, exuded calm when dispatching the penalty that gave Germany the lead – 6.5

Joshua Kimmich – Southgate spoke enviously about him on Sunday and provided the pass of the match in the 48th minute; class act – 7

Jonas Hofmann – Sacrificed at half-time as Flick made a tactical switch to get another striker on but hadn't done enough to stay on – 5

Jamal Musiala – A former England Under-21 who the FA were desperate to retain and his trickery led to Maguire making an aberration – 7

Leroy Sane – Perhaps it is the national team system that doesn't suit but this was another game in which he frittered about on the edges – 5.5

Kai Havertz – Isolated during the first 45 minutes but came to life in the second period; first goal was picture perfect, second secured the draw – 8

SUBS

Werner (for Hofman 46mins) 7

MANAGER

HANSI FLICK – Criticised for his decisions on Friday against Hungary, upped his game here and would have toasted a winner had his defenders done the same – 6.5

REFEREE

Danny Makkelie (Netherlands) – One of the best officials in Europe so it was a surprise he needed VAR to award Germany a clear penalty – 6.5
