PSG 1-1 Arsenal (aet, 4-3 on pens): PSG defend the Champions League title as Gabriel misses penalty

Arsenal suffered heartbreak in the Champions League final in Budapest as they were beaten 4-3 on penalties by PSG after a tense 1-1 draw in 120 minutes.

Mikel Arteta and Luis Enrique saw their teams play out a tense 1-1 draw at the Puskas Arena, where PSG came out on top to clinch back-to-back titles.

Kai Havertz's sixth-minute opener got the ball rolling in a tightly fought encounter, with Ousmane Dembele equalising from the penalty spot midway through the second half.

PSG were without Vitinha, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Dembele or captain Marquinhos for the shoot-out, yet misses from Eberechi Eze and then Gabriel ensured they became the first team since Real Madrid, between 2016 and 2018, to win successive European crowns.

The game's first shot yielded a goal. Havertz, only the second player to start a Champions League final for two different English clubs, raced in behind down the left flank and slammed a brutal finish high into the roof of the net.

PSG were potentially unfortunate that the goal stood, given Leandro Trossard's assist came with his arm as he blocked a pass down the line, and Luis Enrique's team were lamenting their luck again when Bukayo Saka escaped unpunished after an accidental handball in Arsenal's box.

Arsenal completed only 69 passes in the first half, which is the lowest on record by any team in a Champions League final, yet PSG managed just one shot on target.

PSG's fortunes turned just after the hour, when Kvaratskhelia drew a clumsy tackle from Cristhian Mosquera in Arsenal's area. Dembele calmly sent Raya the wrong way, becoming the sixth player to net a penalty in a Champions League final.

Kvaratskhelia almost put PSG ahead at the culmination of a wonderful run in the 77th minute, but Myles Lewis-Skelly deflected the Georgian's prodded effort onto the post.

Substitute Bradley Barcola squandered two glorious chances on the break, either side of Vitinha curling just over as the contest went to extra time.

Arsenal were left furious when Noni Madueke went down under pressure from Nuno Mendes in PSG's box, but Daniel Siebert dismissed the Gunners' appeals, and VAR agreed with the on-field referee, while Marquinhos and Vitinha were unable to continue beyond half-time in extra time.

Viktor Gyokeres saw a strike deflect wide as penalties were required, and the Swede responded to Ramos' emphatically finished opening spot-kick with a neat finish of his own.

Desire Doue made no mistake, but at the end of a stuttering run-up, Eze skewed wide. Raya, however, provided an instant reprieve as he palmed away Mendes' attempt.

Declan Rice, Achraf Hakimi, Gabriel Martinelli and Beraldo stepped up with superb finishes, yet Gabriel skied the decisive penalty way over the crossbar.

Data Debrief: More agony for Arsenal as PSG do it again

PSG have now scored 45 goals in the Champions League this term, matching Barcelona (1999-2000) as the most in a single campaign in the competition's history.

Yet Arsenal's mean defence has conceded only seven goals, and it was another disciplined display from Arteta's team. Perhaps it was no surprise that this was the first Champions League showpiece to go to penalties since 2016; it was also the first such contest to see both teams score since 2018.

However, PSG did have 21 shots throughout the 120 minutes, registering 1.77 expected goals to the Gunners' 0.44 xG from just seven attempts, only one of which was on target.

That strike was, of course, Havertz's opener. The German is only the third player to score for two different teams in a Champions League final (Chelsea, Arsenal), after Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United, Real Madrid) and Mario Mandzukic (Juventus, Bayern Munich). This time, though, he was on the losing team.

This was the 13th European Cup/Champions League final to go to penalties. At least one English team has been involved in five of the last six of those occasions.

But after ending their 22-year wait for Premier League glory, Arsenal still remain without the biggest prize in European football.

Luis Enrique, meanwhile, has now won all three Champions League finals he has been involved in.

He named the same 10 outfielders as he did when PSG hammered Inter 364 days ago, as they became the first team to win both their league title and the Champions League in back-to-back seasons.
