PSG 4-0 Marseille: Parisians smash derby rivals with Mbappe & Icardi's braces

Paris Saint-Germain eased to a 4-0 win over Marseille on Sunday to further extend their lead at the top of Ligue 1.

Mauro Icardi and Kylian Mbappe both scored twice in the first half as Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Marseille 4-0 in Sunday's Ligue 1 clash.

Free-scoring PSG had reeled off five wins in a row in all competitions heading into the first Classique of the season and made light work of seeing off their rivals.

The reigning French champions scored all four goals before half-time thanks to clinical doubles from Icardi and Mbappe in the space of 34 devastating minutes at Parc des Princes.

Edinson Cavani was brought on in the second half for his first appearance since August, but PSG - now eight points clears of closest challengers Nantes at the top of the table - could not add to their tally of 17 goals in their last four matches.

Mbappe opens up the Marseille backline with a brilliant backheel to Icardi. The forward takes the ball in stride and fires low towards the target. Mandanda spreads himself and makes the block with his body to deny the forward a second goal.

PSG double their advantage as Icardi heads home. Rongier loses possession on the edge of the box and Verratti floats the ball over the top for the run of the Argentinian. Icardi beats Mandanda to it and he glances his effort past the Marseille keeper into the bottom left corner. There are slight suspicions of offside, but the goal stands.

Mbappe gets on the scoresheet this time with a tap-in from close range. Verratti opens up the Marseille defence with a fine ball over the top for Di Maria down the right flank. He squares his cross to the back post where Mbappe waits to guide his effort home with ease. PSG are in complete control.

Di Maria threads the needle to release the run of the forward, who drifts in from the left flank in a central position. Mbappe takes on the strike early and it has just enough power to erupt through the hands of Mandanda to roll into the right bottom corner.
