PSG Luis Enrique on 4-1 loss to Newcastle: We didn’t deserve that result

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has overseen Les Parisiens‘ heaviest Champions League group stage defeat in the QSI era in losing 4-1 away to Newcastle United. PSG left-back Lucas Hernandez scored a consolation goal for the visitors. The Spaniard believes that the 4-1 scoreline flatters the Magpies.

“Those are difficult games to live through for a manager“, said the former Barcelona head coach to Canal+. Luis Enrique mentioned that his side’s behavior at the start of the game was very good, citing the first goalscoring chance of the game falling to PSG winger Ousmane Dembélé. “I sincerely think the result is a bit unfair, but not totally. Congratulations to Newcastle, they played very good football. But the scoreline is excessive.” When asked why he had not changed his 4-2-4 formation in order to strengthen his midfield when PSG were already 2-0 down, Luis Enrique replied the following: “Because I thought it was for the best, and I still do.“

Luis Enrique doubled down on his comments in speaking to RMC Sport. “The result is so big for them. But I think we didn’t deserve that result.” PSG will need to step up after last night’s result. In three weeks’ time, they will host AC Milan at the Parc des Princes in their Champions League Group F.
