Luis Enrique would rather sign a new contract with Paris Saint Germain that takes the reigns at Manchester United this summer.
Luis Enrique will snub a move to Manchester United to sign a new deal with Paris Saint Germain. United had made the Spaniard one of their top targets in the club’s search for a permanent manager, amid claims that United representatives had travelled to Paris for talks with the former Barcelona boss.
His current deal with PSG, whom he led to Champions League glory last season, runs until the end of 2026-27. It has been suggested United tried to persuade him not to sign a new contract.
But it's understood the he believes taking over at United is not the right project for him. And he has reservations about taking charge of a club which might not be in the Champions League next season.
The 55-year-old has been in discussions with PSG sporting director Luis Campos over a new contract at the Parc des Princes, that will keep him in the French capital until 2030. Enrique has a strong relationship with Campos, who has also just signed a contract extension.
The news is a blow to United's owners, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers, with Ratcliffe's admiration for Enrique known, and him being one of their main targets. Michael Carrick has taken over as interim boss as club bosses look to choose a full-time manager in the summer.
Old Trafford chiefs want someone who can handle the huge pressure and expectation that comes with being in charge and there is no doubting the wealth of managerial experience that Enrique boasts at the highest level.
He won nine major trophies during his time with Barcelona, including the Champions League in 2015 and has gone on to land another 10 trophies with PSG - including last season's triumph in European football's premier club competition.
When the time does come for him to leave PSG, he is said to favour a second spell in charge at Barca, rather than heading anywhere else.
For United, Carrick will become a contender if he secures Champions League football, while England boss Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti are also under consideration.
