It is an idea that has long since been pushed by assistant director of the academy Yohan Cabaye and it now looks set to become a reality: Paris Saint-Germain are set to create an U23 side, according to Sports Zone and L’Équipe.
PSG removed their academy team from the National 2 at the end of the 2018/19 season, citing the lack of sporting ambition in the league and the high expenses involved in competing in France’s fourth tier. PSG’s U23 category therefore disappeared entirely. AS Monaco more recently made a similar move, but instead created a Groupe Elite, that competes against English sides in the Premier League International Cup.
However, five years later, a new U23 team is set to be created. Its creation will coincide with the creation of a new league, according to L’Équipe. The FFF and LFP are working on a new competition, reserved for U23 sides from Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs, which should begin next season. PSG are set to join this new league.
