PSG's problems: No shot on target and Neymar receives most of the blame

Paris Saint-Germain suffered their first defeat of the season over the weekend, falling to a shock 2-0 loss to Rennes in Ligue 1. This came just days after their impressive win over Manchester City in the Champions League in midweek.

What was most concerning for Mauricio Pochettino's side, though, was that they didn't manage a single shot on target despite starting with their attacking trident of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.

The Parisians weren't at their best defensively, either, and conceded goals shortly before and after half time. The second, in particular, left Pochettino frustrated.

"Conceding a second goal like that hurt," Pochettino said after the game.

"PSG cannot afford to make these kinds of mistakes."

Messi, Neymar, Mbappe and Angel di Maria all failed to send a shot on target. Messi came closer than the rest, though, hitting the crossbar with a freekick.

Criticism of Neymar in France

Neymar, meanwhile, had more criticism than the others, with L'Equipe writing that the Brazilian "is, this autumn, far from the player he was with Barcelona five or six years ago or even with PSG during the summer of 2020".

Neymar has scored just two of his last 41 shots on goal and he's not having the best time on the pitch lately. French media are pointing fingers at his performances and are looking for answers to his problems.

Le Parisien also scrutinised the former Barcelona forward, accusing him of being "technically wasteful" and "lacking precision".

"Neymar was a shadow of himself," Le Parisien wrote.

"He was the worst he's been since the start of the season without a doubt."
