Paul Scholes claims Ruben Amorim's style doesn't suit £72m star after his struggles this season

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has claimed Ruben Amorim's playing style doesn't suit Rasmus Hojlund.

The Danish striker has only managed one goal since December 12, and endured a 21-game goal drought across three months. Meanwhile, he has bagged only eight times in all competitions in 2024-25.

It comes after he scored 16 goals in his debut season following a £72million move from Atalanta in 2023.

And Scholes believes a lack of crosses into the box has played a big role in Hojlund's struggles this term.

'We’ve been saying it for ages, you say he needs that confidence and luck. Too many times he’s not in the right area of the pitch,' Scholes said on TNT Sports.

'The amount of times he’s in his own half, trying to do a defensive job which you understand.

'I remember when he first came in "we've almost go an Alan Shearer". I thought he's a big centre forward, physical striker, runs in behind and loves crosses. He doesn't get crosses. Garnacho doesn't cross the ball. Dorgu really doesn't cross the ball Dalot is capable.

'He’s capable but the lad doesn’t he know what’s coming, there no rhythm to the play, there’s nothing to suit the way he wants to play football.'

Meanwhile, as Hojlund struggles to find his scoring boots, Ruben Amorim has been eyeing up other options to fix his side's goalscoring issues.

Mail Sport revealed this week that United have made Ipswich Town's Liam Delap their No 1 striker target.

The Red Devils are ready to trigger Delap’s release clause of around £40m if Ipswich are relegated from the Premier League.

It is understood that the 22-year-old is their firm favourite ahead of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and other potential targets such as Victor Gyokeres, of Sporting Lisbon, and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike.

Mail Sport also understands that United are also one of multiple Premier League sides are interested in signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves this summer.

Newcastle, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur are also potential suitors.

Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee could be used as makeweights if United are unwilling to pay straight cash for any of their striker targets.
