Chelsea lost 0-2 at home to Tottenham in Premier League Round 8. In the 77th minute, Mike Penders misjudged a corner and put the ball into his own net, giving Tottenham the lead.
Statistics show that Penders became the second goalkeeper in Chelsea’s history to score an own goal in a Premier League match. Previously, only Petr Cech had scored an own goal for Chelsea in the Premier League, doing so against Everton in December 2009.
On December 12, 2009, Chelsea drew 3-3 with Everton at Stamford Bridge, with Petr Cech scoring an own goal in the 12th minute. Now, Penders has scored an own goal at the same stadium, with nearly 15 years separating the two goalkeepers’ own goals.
