Pep Guardiola is renowned for his sharp fashion sense but as the Manchester City manager was given an award on Sunday night to honour last season's Premier League title victory, he felt obliged to apologise for his appearance.
Hours after City defeated Southampton 6-1 with a swashbuckling display, Guardiola headed to the Radisson hotel in Manchester where the Football Writers' Association North West Managers' awards dinner was being held.
As he was introduced onstage, Guardiola apologised for his casual appearance of a jumper and jeans.
'Good evening, a little bit embarrassing,' Guardiola said. 'I am a disaster. I didn't expect how important this event... everybody is so elegant with a suit and tie. And I come here (gestures to his appearance).
'Believe me I didn't know it, I promise you next time - well, should we win - but if it happens I will be more properly (dressed) like this event deserves. I am so sorry.'
Guardiola thanked the audience for helping him to settle and feel welcome in Manchester, where he has been manager since 2016.
'I am fortunate to be here in your country, in England. It is incredible, a dream like a little boy and then a young manager to come here in your country and be manager here. It is a dream come true.
'I want to share, of course, this award for the whole Manchester City family because it is a real family. I know people say "hey you have a lot of money" and that's true, that's true. But in spite of that, it is incredible, the people I am working with. I am a lucky guy to be here.
'I have a famous writer in Spain who complains to me "you are a lucky guy, all you do people write about it. I wish people would write about my books". That is what makes football so special. It is special for the players and all the people working, especially the media who support what we do.
'Enjoy the evening, I am tired and I am leaving, I am sorry - Wednesday we have a game. Enjoy the night, hopefully see you next year.'
City and Pep are back in Champions League action on Wednesday night at home to Shakhtar Donetsk.
