Pep Guardiola questioned the merits of a European Super League, believing it could dilute domestic competitions.
Manchester City were named as one of 11 superpowers across the continent allegedly involved in secret discussions about forming a 16-team breakaway league.
Guardiola claimed he was open to hearing any concepts on the table but was steadfast in hoping the integrity of the Premier League remains intact.
'For me the local competitions, like the Premier League and La Liga, are so important,' the City manager said.
'We cannot deny the local leagues - all of that history and what happened. But I don't know the ideas. I would like to know the ideas.' Sunday's derby against Manchester United would become a more regular fixture should a Super League comes to pass.
The idea came under fire from the Association of European Leagues, who represent 900 clubs in 25 leagues across the continent. They claimed it would have 'serious and lasting implications' for the long-term sustainability of the game.
Guardiola added: 'The managers adapt to the rules. When the Premier League says "you have to play today and tomorrow" then we have to play today and tomorrow.
'When UEFA say you have to be on time, we have to be on time. We have the meetings but at the end they decide. We will adapt to what they do, what they decide.'
Guardiola is wary of the threat posed by a resurgent United, revealing his relationship with Jose Mourinho is 'much better' than imagined.
The Spaniard did play down the derby, however. Asked if it was the most important fixture of the season he replied: 'No, no, no. Games against the contenders are special because if you win they don't win but we are in November.
'Maybe the game at Old Trafford will be more important. We're on a good run, United as well.'
Guardiola conceded that rivalries in La Liga are more boisterous than in England but reckons there will be an edge at the Etihad Stadium given United's recent upturn.
'All the derbies are special,' he added. 'Spain there is more noise than here but it's special here.
'When United have the ball and the people in front - wow - they can create something. They have incredible amount of talent up front and in the middle as well.
'That is why we have to defend deep and strong, defend the crosses, avoid set pieces as they are huge and far better than us.'
