Real Madrid's thrashing of Real Valladolid had a euphoric effect on Madrid fans ahead of Wednesday's Copa del Rey clásico at Spotify Camp Nou, starting with president Florentino Pérez. The Madrid president gave a pep talk to his captain Karim Benzema with the momentous Barca-Madrid clash in mind.
Madrid believe in the comeback and are even feeling reinforced ahead of the Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea, once they have seen that their star player Benzema has regained his goalscoring touch, as well as the footballing harmony with Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo.
In the capital there was an inevitable feeling that this season Barça, under the guidance of Xavi Hernández, have reversed the trends in the duels between the two La Liga giants. If the pre-season defeat in Las Vegas (1-0) was seen as an accident, the 3-1 win in the first round of La Liga reaffirmed Madrid's faith. The defeat in the Spanish Super Cup final was a psychological blow. Not only was the path to a six-trophy season once again thwarted, but Real Madrid showed an unexpected inferiority to Barça.
Despite yet another defeat in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals (0-1), Madrid fans felt that the Blaugrana's defensive and miserly play went beyond the numerous absentees in Xavi Hernández's line-up. The newnextdefeat in the La Liga clásico (2-1) before the last international break was another glass of cold water, though, as it meant another humiliation at Spotify Camp Nou and, above all, saying goodbye to the league title.
Now, with Benzema's form and Madrid's agonising ability in the big games, Pérez and his directors believe in the possibility of coming back to reach the final of the cup. The difference is 0-1, and between the two giants of Spanish football anything is possible.
According to 'Defensa Central', Pérez went down to the dressing room at the Santiago Bernabéu to congratulate the players after the win over Valladolid, as is customary. However, this Sunday he was particularly attentive to the French striker.
"Karim, I'm telling you seriously.... At this level and with these goals you've scored, we'll come back on Wednesday in the Copa. We can do it," the president told his captain.
