Peterborough chairman backs Maddison after he was spotted out drinking

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has refused to rebuke Marcus Maddison for enjoying a night out on the town over the weekend - and even joked he'd pay for his bar tab.

The winger inspired Peterborough's 3-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday, scoring either side of Josh Knight, and went out for celebratory drinks afterwards.

Maddison was spotted later that evening by supporters drinking at the Red Room Bar in the Peterborough city centre.

Some decided to inform the club's chairman about the matter and accused Maddison of unprofessional behaviour.

MacAnthony responded by condemning the 'snitches' who had messaged him about Maddison and insisted the 25-year-old was well within his right to go out after the game.

'[I've] had [a] lot of away fans messaging me about MM (Marcus Maddison) being out on Saturday night,' he wrote on Twitter.

'The outrage over a young person who had a brilliant day at the office on Saturday, then going out and enjoying himself.

'I've told the Red Room Bar to send me his tab as I'll happily pay it. Play hard, work hard.'

The Peterborough chief added: 'It's mad. The amount of snitches who message me about this stuff is daft.'

One fan provoked a fiery response from MacAthony after appearing to suggest Maddison had been doing more than just drinking.

'You have said that now multiple times on social media which is f***ing scandalous. Be careful... very careful with that nonsense and lies.'

Maddison hit back at some of the criticism by writing on Instagram: 'If you can't celebrate after that today, what's even worth celebrating?'

The winger has made a blistering start to this season, scoring three times and laying on a further five assists from Peteborough's opening six games.

Saturday's victory over Sunderland saw The Posh move up to seventh in the League One standings.
