Portugal 1-0 Netherlands: Ronaldo wins another int'l trophy after UNL triumph

The inaugural Nations League crown went to Portugal, who defeated Netherlands in front of a partisan Estadio do Dragao crowd on Sunday.

Portugal secured Nations League glory on Sunday as Goncalo Guedes' second-half strike earned a 1-0 victory over Netherlands at the Estadio do Dragao.

The host nation had been touted as favourites ahead of the inaugural Finals and they lived up to that billing in Porto, adding more major silverware to their European Championship triumph three years ago.

Cristiano Ronaldo had netted a hat-trick in the 3-1 semi-final win over Switzerland but he was kept relatively quiet on this occasion by Virgil van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt.

Instead it was left to Guedes to settle matters, exchanging passes with Bernardo Silva and smashing home from the edge of the box, although Jasper Cillessen may feel he could have done better.

A long ball is lofted towards Silva, who surges into the box between Van Dijk and Blind and takes it on his chest. They close in on him and ease him away from the ball. Silva goes to ground and screams for a spot-kick, but the referee shakes his head.

Guerreiro is completely beaten for pace by Bergwijn and he crosses into the middle, but it's headed clear and Portugal break, culminating in a fierce long-range effort by Fernandes that Cillessen has to beat behind for a corner at full-stretch!

Ronaldo then stings Cillessen's gloves with an attempt of his own from inside the box, but the keeper reacts well to deny him!

Silva drifts in from the right and opens up some space. Fernandes sees an opportunity and lets fly, but it rises just over the bar! That wasn't far away at all!

Ronaldo cuts in from the left and works a yard efficiently. He opens up and strikes hard and low at goal, but it's too close to Cillessen, who can deal with it comfortably.

Silva cuts it back to the edge of the box from the left and Guedes hits an absolute rocket that Cillessen gets a hand to, but can't keep out as it squirms into the bottom corner! What a ferocious strike!

Van de Beek crosses from the right and Depay attacks it with menace, heading firmly down, but Patricio is equal to it and keeps it out!

Portugal surge forward in numbers and Guerreiro finds himself crowded out in the box. He works it through to Moutinho, who goes down under challenge but the referee doesn't award a spot-kick!
