Potential NASL team owned by Demba Ba and Hazard reveals name and logo

The San Diego expansion club owned by the two players has released a video promoting their colors and badge.

The NASL expansion side in San Diego owned by Demba Ba and Eden Hazard released their name and colors via video Tuesday.

The club, which hopes to begin play in 2018, is set to be called 1904 FC, which may be odd to those not in San Diego since it isn't the year of the city or the team's founding. It is a reference to the common shorthand for the city, “SD”, which is the 19th and fourth letters in the alphabet.

“We believe in the people of San Diego,” Ba said in a statement. “Our name reflects our commitment to the city and street culture. The number is already iconic in San Diego. Now it will stand for the passion and pride of our region.”

Ba, who currently plays in China, is the principle owner of the team while his former teammate at Chelsea, Eden Hazard, is a minority shareholder.

However, while the club seems ready to roll for next year, its future remains very much uncertain due to the questions surrounding the NASL.

The league failed to achieve second division sanctioning for next season, which would see it drop to the third tier of U.S. soccer.

The NASL has filed an antitrust lawsuit against the U.S. soccer federation over the sanction, but if such a move is unsuccessful, the remaining teams in the league may depart for other leagues or fold.

If such a development does occur, it is unclear what would become of San Diego 1904 FC.
