Feb 15 (Reuters) - Chelsea manager Graham Potter has hit back at pundits who criticised him for not "getting angry" when his team were denied a penalty against West Ham United last weekend.
Conor Gallagher's shot was stopped by the arm of West Ham's Tomas Soucek late on but the referee waved play on. The match ended 1-1.
Former Chelsea player Joe Cole, working as a pundit for BT Sport, said Potter should have caused "a bit of uproar" while Rio Ferdinand compared him to Jose Mourinho.
Potter, whose side play the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie at Borussia Dortmund later on Wednesday, said he had a responsibility not to contribute to the abuse of referees.
"The same media are talking about me being angrier but then running stories about problems with referees at grassroots level," Potter said. "They don't see the connection."
A BBC questionnaire responded to by more than 900 amateur referees in England revealed worrying levels of abuse and intimidation with multiple cases of death threats being made.
"That's not to say we don't all lose our temper; we do because it's an emotional thing," added Potter.
"I have a responsibility to myself, to Chelsea, to the game, and to act in a way that is the right thing for me."

remember man UTD spend billions and couldn't get it right, that's the same path Chelsea is following,it's not about spending, are the players worth the money, will they improve the team, are they better than the players we had in their positions, that's factors to consider before signing players, but Boely is doing none of that
What excites me about the spending is that Chelsea are acquiring young talents who can become great players in the next 5 years. It's upto the manager if he wants to utilise them. If he doesn't fancy them, these players will have resale value and it's good for the club's financial condition. Under Roman Abramovich in recent seasons, Chelsea were splashing just as much as Man Utd on supposed readymade players but the results weren't quite what we wanted because we were constantly signing the wrong profile of players. Chelsea under Roman Abramovich have been consistently signing the wrong strikers since Drogba left. So, I wouldn't be too pessimistic about the January window. One thing I do know is that the new ownership needs a little more time to stabilise the structure and deliver the expectations. Our new directors were appointed just before January. They have shown ambition in this recent window. I know these owners want to win. It's why I'm prepared to back them. I can understand that the fanbase is angry that the results this season haven't been good but we shouldn't have expected a lot this season especially considering that we had a change of ownership and several changes in the hierarchy. If we don't see an improvement in results next season, then even I would start to question the direction of my club. Don't get me wrong, I want us to win trophies. But we have to pursue sustainability with success. I don't like the idea of short term success and instability. It never sat well with me. I want us to win doubles and trebles. I don't think it's possible if we're frequently sacking managers and having to revamp the squad every time.

Some reports suggest that Potter was a big advocate for David Datro Fofana and Mykhailo Mudryk. To be honest, I don't really know what to believe but I'm going to trust this ownership because they've brought in so many good young talents. Nobody is dressing this up as "Project Youth" but it actually is. We're signing young players just like Arsenal but the difference is that we're showing more ambition in the market by signing more players than they did. Now Potter needs time to work with these players and get them to integrate and work collectively and buy into his methods. We've not played Potterball all season. Once Potterball is implemented and we still don't deliver, then you have every right to question the manager.

you which, in your wisest dream and imagination it can't happened, for an English coach to win a silverware.
English managers have generally been awful but Graham Potter is a rare breed of English managers who have a modern style of football. I have no doubts in my mind that he'll come good eventually at Chelsea if he is given time.

my friend what do you need to understand that the players signed were the reason they sacked Tuchel, they were not Tuchel's choices, and even the players they signed in the January transfer windows are not chosen by potter, the owners did themselves and they were even overpaying for every player they sign

you're very dull,Turn what around if I may ask?are you really happy seeing Chelsea in this situation?if Chelsea can sack Tuchel with just 3 defeat in all competition and replace him with this quack coach and you think this amateur deserve the backing he's getting?I have made up my mind to see Chelsea finish outside top six
Unlike you, I am not surprised to see Chelsea in the messy condition that they're in. We have been recruiting poorly for a very long time especially during Abramovich's final 5 years at the club. Tuchel was sacked not because of results but because he had a different vision for the club. He wanted instant results but wasn't focused on stability and the long term goals of the club. He was Roman's choice of manager. But Roman Abramovich is no longer the owner of Chelsea and the club doesn't care about short term goals. Todd Boehly will operate differently. I am fine with short term losses if it means long term gains. I don't care where we finish as long as it's not relegation. Top 4 is not a trophy. Honestly, I couldn't care less where we finish between 2nd and 17th because you don't win a trophy at the end of the season. I want us to ride through the storm this season but compete for the PL next season. I want stability at the club. I trust Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, Christopher Vivell and Graham Potter. I believe these guys really know what they're doing which is why they've pumped so much investment into the club to take care of our future in the next 5 years. Let's see in the next 3 years how Chelsea fare. We'll come back to this conversation then.
