Arsenal’s Premier League title pain is set to carry on this season according to TWO supercomputers.
Mikel Arteta’s side looked to be firmly among the contenders to challenge for the crown once again. And they got off to a quick start but have stuttered over recent weeks.
They were denied by rivals Manchester City before the international break and were made to work hard despite winning against both Leicester and Southampton. The Gunners then suffered their first defeat of the campaign against Bournemouth.
It sees the North London side third and already four points off the pace behind leaders Liverpool. And Arsenal will be unable to force themselves back into contention, according to two prediction models.
Data from Opta suggests that Arteta’s side have just a 11.3% chance of winning the league - down from 20 per cent before their reverse on the South Coast. Meanwhile, a prediction from CSDB has the Gunners finishing third come the end of the season after a supercomputer predicted all results until the end of the season, simulating the campaign 1,000 times.
While it is bad news for Arsenal, City are certainly fancied to claim a fifth consecutive title. They currently have a huge 75.5% chance of winning the league once again with Opta following their win against Wolves - CSDB concurring with that prediction.
Current table toppers Liverpool are predicted to finish as runners up by Opta, who suggest that the Reds have a 13% chance of glory in Arne Slot’s first season, while CSDB predict they will win the title by a single point.
Former Manchester United star Gary Neville has also offered his view on the title race and believes it will be a straight shootout between Arsenal and City. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: "Would these two teams [at Anfield] win the title? I don't think so.
“What Liverpool are doing defensively at the moment is interesting. I'd like to assess it at Christmas. I still think they're short. Chelsea are short, they're not going to win the league. I think Arsenal are the only team that can take on City. But you can't afford to fall too many points behind."
It is not only the title race that has thrilled over the opening weeks of the season. The race for the Champions League is wide open, with Chelsea predicted to seal the final place in the top four.
Tottenham, Newcastle and Brighton will apparently follow, with Aston Villa missing out on a spot in Europe entirely. Manchester United will also endure a miserable campaign and finish tenth. At the other end of the table, Championship winners are predicted to stay up after their thrilling 3-2 comeback victory against fellow strugglers Southampton.
