The Premier League has appointed Guardian chief David Pemsel as their new Chief Executive.

News of the appointment emerged following a meeting of Premier League chairman in London on Wednesday morning. He will join the Premier League no later than April 2020.

Richard Masters will continue as interim chief executive in the meantime but an appointment brings the search to an end.

The Premier League have undertaken a lengthy search for a new CEO after Richard Scudamore stepped down at the end of 2018.

Multiple candidates rebuffed the offer to replace Scudamore as the league grew frustrated at the time it was taking to finalise his successor.

Tim Davie, the chief executive of BBC Studios, turned down an offer back in January while their first choice, Susanna Dinnage, pulled out weeks before she was due to start the role.

Bruce Buck, Chairman of Chelsea Football Club and Chairman of the Premier League Nominations Committee which conducted the recruitment process, said: 'We are delighted to welcome David to the Premier League.

'His straightforward style and personal integrity make him an ideal person to lead the business.

'At the Guardian, he has shown strong leadership through a period of change and transformation. Returning the group to profit is an impressive achievement and has demonstrated that he can develop and execute a transformational plan in an ever-changing business landscape.

'In addition, he has worked with the big players in digital and media and has managed diverse groups and constituencies.

'We are looking forward to working with David and are sure he will be a great asset to the Premier League.'

Presnel is proven in a similar role at the Guardian Media Group where he led the strategic and commercial expansion.

Having finalised a deal for Presnel, the search will now focus on finding a non-executive chair for the league.
