Premier League penalty takers 2018-19

Who is each Premier League club's first-choice penalty converter, and who is on spot-kick duty if there is no designated taker?

Riyad Mahrez stepped up to the penalty spot in the absence of Sergio Aguero, who had already been substituted, and had the chance to clinch a last-minute 1-0 win over Liverpool in the Premier League.

The Algeria international was involved in a tiff with Gabriel Jesus over who should take the penalty, and he took to the spot – only to send it sky-high into Row Z of the Anfield Road end of Anfield.

So who is each club's designated penalty-taker, or are duties rotated?

#1  Arsenal | Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang   Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang split penalty duties at the Emirates following the departure of Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United in the January transfer window. Lacazette sported a 100% penalty-taking record in the 2017-18 season, with Aubameyang missing one and scoring the other that he was tasked with.

#2  Bournemouth | Joshua King, Junior Stanislas   Cherries forward Joshua King sported a 100% penalty-taking record for the 2017-18 season in the Premier League with his two spot-kicks, and took his tally to three for the season by October 2018.Junior Stanislas also assumes the role for Bournemouth, however, while Callum Wilson missed the first spot-kick that the Cherries were handed this season.

#3  Brighton | Glenn Murray, Pascal Gross   Glenn Murray missed two of his six penalties scored in 2017-18 but has netted both his spot-kicks of the 2018-19 season to maintain his duties as the Seagulls' designated penalty-taker – and, at 35 years old, could very well contend for an England cap.Pascal Gross has also been on spot-kick duty for Brighton in the past, successfully converting against Manchester United early in the season but then missing his next effort against Fulham – with Murray successfully converting the second penalty in that same game.

#4  Burnley | Chris Wood   The New Zealand forward is Burnley's first-choice penalty-taker since arriving from Leeds in 2017 and netted in the club's Europa League qualifying fixture against Olympiakos in August 2018.

#5  Cardiff City | Joe Ralls   The Cardiff ace assumed penalty-taking duties by accident, and is in good form with them – netting four out of five spot-kicks in the 2017-18 season in the Championship.Said Ralls:  "It was at Reading and Whitts was missing and Pilks wasn’t there either so I just grabbed the ball. No-one told me."I’d been joking with Craig Noone at the beginning of the game about who would take them because it wasn’t obvious so I just thought I’d step up."Luckily I scored – and it was lucky too – and it’s just happened that I’ve taken them ever since."

#6  Chelsea | Eden Hazard, Jorginho   The Belgian international is Mr Reliable for Chelsea on the spot, last missing a penalty on April 2017 in all competitions (as of October 2018).Hazard is also the penalty-taker for Belgium and assumes the duties for Chelsea in all competitions, though it was Jorginho who slotted home against Huddersfield this season in the Premier League. The forward is one of the most skilled penalty-takers in the Premier League, with Matt Le Tissier stating: "It is a very cool technique. You need to be a very confident boy to do this and Eden Hazard is certainly that."He basically stands and waits for the goalkeeper to move. He is just so confident as he steps up, he watches the goalkeeper as he is striking the ball and does not watch the ball at all."And that takes a lot of bottle to do that."

#7  Crystal Palace | Luka Milivojevic   Luka Milivojevic is the Eagles' first-choice spot-kicker, having successfully converted seven of his eight penalties during the 2017-18 season.A brief tussle, however, occured during Crystal Palace's fixture against Bournemouth when the London side were awarded a 90th-minute penalty with the score at 2-2. Christian Benteke ignored instructions by assuming penalty duties himself despite Milivojevic already scoring a penalty earlier in the game – and then missed when he stepped up.

#8  Everton | Gylfi Sigurdsson   Sigurdsson is the first-choice penalty-taker for both Everton and his national side Iceland, taking over spot-kick duties from Toffee veteran Wayne Rooney following his departure to D.C. United. The Iceland international had a 100% penalty-taking record with his three strikes from the spot in the 2017-18 campaign.

#9  Fulham | Aboubakar Kamara   Kamara sported a 100% penalty record going into the new Premier League season following successful promotion with Fulham, scoring five total penalties during his time at Craven Cottage.

#10  Huddersfield | Rajiv van La Parra, Aaron Mooy   Both Rajiv van La Parra and Aaron Mooy scored one penalty apiece for Huddersfield in the 2017-18 season of the Premier League out of the two awarded to the Terriers that campaign.

#11  Leicester City | Jamie Vardy, James Maddison   Jamie Vardy is a reliable spot-kicker for the Foxes, only missing two of his last 11 penalties in the Premier League as of October 2018, scoring five in total during the 2017-18 season.

#12  Liverpool | James Milner   James Milner has been Liverpool's most dependable penalty-taker, having scored 13 spot-kicks following his strike against Paris Saint-Germain at home in the Champions League.Even so, however, Jurgen Klopp attempted to rotate his spot-kickers in the 2017-18 season with Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah – but after the Egyptian's miss against Huddersfield town, re-instated the duties to the club's vice-captain.Milner broke a record with his spot-kick against Crystal Palace at the start of the season when he became the first player to score eight consecutive Premier League goals from penalties.

#13  Manchester City | Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez   Manchester City's all-time top-scorer Sergio Aguero is the club's first-choice penalty-taker, but there is no set-in-stone second penalty-taker for when he is off the pitch. In the case of Liverpool's 0-0 draw with Man City in the Premier League in October, City were awarded a penalty at the dying stages of regular time. Aguero had been subbed off earlier in the half, and Gabriel Jesus and Riyad Mahrez were left to squabble over penalty duties. In the end, Mahrez took the penalty – and missed.

#14  Manchester United | Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez   According to Jose Mourinho, Paul Pogba is the designated penalty-taker at Old Trafford following a small bust-up between the Frenchman and Alexis Sanchez in the game against Leicester.Said Mourinho about Pogba: "The thinking was that he is a very good penalty taker and he likes the responsibility of it and he’s the first choice."

#15  Newcastle | Kenedy, Matt Ritchie   Kenedy took on penalty-taking duties from Matt Ritchie – who had not scored a penalty for the Magpies since April 2017 – when his side was awarded a spot-kick in the dying stages of a Premier League game against Cardiff in August 2018.The forward, however, had his effort saved – which was also his first-ever penalty taken for the club – and the game ended in a frustrating stalemate.

#16  Southampton | Danny Ings, Charlie Austin   Boyhood Saints fan Danny Ings marked his return to the club by assuming penalty duties, scoring in the 2-2 draw against Brighton in September ahead of second-choice spot-kicker Charlie Austin.

#17  Tottenham | Harry Kane   The Tottenham forward is the designated penalty-taker for both club and country, with two of his 30 goals scored in the 2017-18 coming in the form of a spot-kick.Kane's strike from the spot against Brighton in September took his tally to 13 top-flight penalties since August 2015 – making him the highest-scoring penalty-taker in the Premier League, while he has failed to find the net with just two of his 15 efforts in that time.

#18  Watford | Troy Deeney   Troy Deeney is Watford's premier penalty-taker but missed his last two spot-kicks of the 2017-18 season, though scored three – including a last-minute effort against Arsenal at the death of regular time that won the game 2-1.Deeney netted three penalties in the 2016-17 season, and six spot-kicks the campaign prior.

#19  West Ham | Marko Arnautovic   Marko Arnautovic is the Hammers' first-choice penalty-taker this season and convereted from the spot in the early season fixture against Bournemouth, beating Asmir Begovic. In the 2017-18, however, spot-kick duty was on rotation – with the likes of Mark Noble, Andre Ayew, and Manuel Lanzini all assuming the role.

#20  Wolves | Ruben Neves, Jota   Wolves do not have a designated penalty-taker with the role expected to be shared between some members of their attacking force, including Ruben Neves and Jota.
