Tony Pulis 'despised' Arsene Wenger and wound his players up to such an extent it contributed to Ryan Shawcross breaking Aaron Ramsey's leg, former Stoke striker Dave Kitson has claimed.
The ugly incident came back in February 2010 when the Stoke defender clattered into the Wales international, who sustained fractures to the tibia and fibula in his right leg.
It was a reckless and full-blooded challenge from Shawcross and Kitson, now retired, has shed light on just why the Potters were so fired up for the clash.
'I heard the crack of Ramsey’s leg from the bench,' Kitson recalled in his Sun column. 'I heard the screaming. And the build-up to the game contributed to this moment.
'Stoke manager Tony Pulis absolutely despised Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, hated the way he played.
'All week I had never seen a manager so desperate to win a game of football, it was bordering on out of control.
'I remember Pulis pacing up and down shouting random things — this bundle of nervous energy blurting random swear words, trying to burn off his own nervous energy.
'And, of course, the upshot of all of that energy was that we went over the top and it cost Ramsey a year of his career.'
It can be argued that it is a manager's job to get players geared up for a huge clash and it is commonplace for them to get overly enthusiastic.
Kitson, however, believes Pulis's vendetta against Wenger and his style of football crossed a line.
'It seemed to me that was as a direct result of players reacting to their manager’s over enthusiasm and buying into that whole thing and carrying out his instructions and crossing the line.
'But it just went too far. His desperation to beat Wenger and justify his way of playing football. It crossed the line and went too far.'
Kitson saw Wenger's wrath first hand from the bench, even claiming the Frenchman singled him out to express his disappointment.
'It was just horrendous,' the former Reading man added. 'I distinctly remember Wenger turning around in the technical area absolutely horrified by it.'
'The first person he looked at when he turned around was me on the bench because I was in line with him.
'Even though it wasn’t me who broke his leg, I was on that bench, part of that team.
'Wenger gave me this look of complete and utter disappointment — the kind of look your dad gives you when you’ve f***** up, when he’s gone beyond anger.
'It was as if he was saying to me "I’m surprised that you would be a part of this".
'He knows how to win football matches. He finds a way to win, that’s the mark of a good manager.
'It’s just the way that he went about it, I didn’t want to be a part of it.'
The Gunners boss was incensed after the game. He cited two previous incidents leading to serious injuries — to Eduardo and Abou Diaby — in which, he felt, his players were deliberately targeted.
For Ramsey, who was then only 19, he would be out for over eight months and missed 29 games for the Gunners, essentially wiping out an entire season for him.

No need to berate Pulis. We all know what kind of man he is with his football. A small man indeed. Tailor-made football for cowards who cant play football like a real footballer.
A. This is not berating, this is revealing. B. Contrary to what you think, revealing this is not only commendable of Kitson to do but also allows the rest of us a reprieve to get the confirmation of what we always knew to be true.

Managers who despise AW - Allardyce, Pulis and Maureen. Trend, what trend?
Good point and those individuals were all fighting to be Fergies best friend.

Post match the focus was on protecting Shawcross with Pulis coming up with the lie "the lads in tears in there, he hasnt got a bad bone in his body".........the commentators and media bought into it. The alternative was too awful to imagine - could this mean that for the sake of a three match ban it was possible for a player to take out a Salah or Aguero for an entire season.
Ask Ramos who has made a career out of deliberately fouling opponents and getting away with a majority of them as he plays for RM?

Pulis should be managing rugby teams not football. Some dimwitted Stokies actually claim Ramsey broke his own leg!

If he incited violence...should he not be arrested? Pulis was, is and forever will be, a complete dirt bag. Throw fat Sam into that group as well.

Quiet as a mouse for all these years and now wants to repent.......the cover up was disgusting. Shortly after the final whistle Shawcross was selected to play for England.

How any fan of football could "De.spise" Arsenal's way of playing. I don't like Arsenal as a club due to the fact I'm a Scottish Celtic supporter but come on, they tried to play the right way. Tells you everything about the type of manager Pulis is. He's one of the old fashioned dinosaurs who can't stand "fancy p ant fo.reign ideas".

the sad thing about the whole affair was that Stoke still didn't beat Arsenal in that game so for all his venom aimed at Arsene he still couldn't beat him..

Good read that. I think Kitson is 100% right I mean we can all picture Pulis behaving like that. The long throws from Delap, the horrendous tackles, the rugby tackle marking in the box from corners etc and he has the cheek to despite Wenger who represented everything good about the premiership for so long? The obvious reason for this is of course jealousy.

Just sums up Pulis as a manager to hate a manager like Arsene Wenger who beautiful football to these shores. Pulis just proved what a limited manager he is and always has been. If you read Jermaine Pennants book it will tell all you need to know what kind of person Pulis is. Dreadful manager

Worst part of this whole saga was that Ramsey got booed on his return to the Britannia. I've been to Stoke games as a neutral and respect their fans and the club but that was one of the most classless things I've ever witnessed from a football crowd.
