Man United have moved a step closer to securing one of their big summer transfer targets with RB Leipzig naming their price for Xavi Simons, according to reports from Germany.

Mail Sport revealed last week that the attacking midfielder was one of several options for Ruben Amorim's side as they approach the summer window.

Man United are keen to bolster their ranks after a disappointing Premier League campaign which sees the club sitting in 14th place with only five matches to play.

Simons made a permanent switch from Paris Saint-Germain to Leipzig in January for £48million plus add-ons, but could be sold for a quick profit this summer.

And Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has claimed that Leipzig have set an asking price of £68.6million for Simons for when the summer window opens.

Simons' versatility and age means he has the profile desired for Amorim's system.

The 22-year-old Netherlands international, who has scored 10 goals and provided six assists this season, has also been followed by Bayern Munich and Manchester City, while Liverpool have watched Leipzig consistently this season.

With finances tight at Old Trafford as they battle Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), Simons' signature is likely to are likely to hinge on Man United hitting the Champions League jackpot.

Despite their poor domestic season, Amorim's are just three games away from securing their place at European football's top table after last week's dramatic Europa League quarter-final win over Lyon.

Next month, they face a two-legged semi-final against Atletico Bilbao. The winner of the Europa League is granted a spot in the Champions League which would be worth an estimated £85m to Man United.

However the season ends, it's set to be a busy summer transfer window at Old Trafford with the club anxious to tie up deals for Ipswich striker Liam Delap and Wolves' Matheus Cunha as soon as possible.

Both players have a release clause — £62.5m for Cunha and £30m for Delap — and Man United hope to have terms finalised for the Brazilian by next month while they still have headroom under PSR.

Man United also hope to sign Delap but face increasing competition for his signature as Chelsea and others consider activating a £30m release clause which will be triggered once Ipswich's relegation from the Premier League is confirmed.

Victor Osimhen is another option even though the £70m-rated Napoli striker would be twice the price.
