Rangers fell to a disappointing defeat on their return to the Champions League, after goals from Edson Alvarez, Steven Berghuis and Mohammed Kudus put Ajax 3-0 up inside the first-half to blow the visitors away.

Alvarez opened the scoring in the 17th minute after converting a corner with a well-timed header from the centre of the box to the back post of Jon McLaughlin's goal.

Berghuis and Kudus then made it 3-0 with two goals in 115 seconds, with Kudus netting a fine solo effort for the goal of the match and the scoreline reflected the hosts' dominance in the game.

Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn then continued his fins form since his £31million move from Tottenham with an eighth goal of the season in the 80th minute, after latching onto a loose back pass and rounding McLaughlin.
