Rangers and Feyernoord came together on an emotional night to observe a minute's silence in honour of Fernando Ricksen's life.

Ricksen, who made more than 250 appearances for Rangers between 2000 and 2006, died aged 43 after losing his battle with motor neurone disease on Wednesday.

Supporters inside the ground applauded in the second minute of the match in a nod to Ricksen, whose squad number at the club was two.

A banner which read: 'A warrior until the end. Rest easy Fernando' was also held aloft in the Rangers end before kick-off.

The Rangers players wore black armbands for the Europa League group opener on Thursday night in honour of Ricksen.

Supporters arrived at Ibrox early to leave scarves, flowers, balloons and shirts outside the ground to pay their respects to the former Holland international.

Former Rangers players Gregory Vignal and Thomas Buffel, who played alongside Ricksen during his time at the club, were seen laying a shirt next to floral tributes ahead of the match.

Earlier in the day, boss Steven Gerrard and captain James Tavernier laid a wreath outside the club's ground in memory of Ricksen.

The entire current Rangers squad were present and held a minute's silence in honour of the club's former player.

Gerrard called on his players this week to secure victory as a tribute to Ricksen, saying on Wednesday: 'It's very sad news for everyone connected to the club and, more importantly, his young family. On behalf of the club I would like to pay tribute. He was a fantastic player who had a decorated career.

'I'm sure there will be a lot of emotions in the stadium tomorrow and I think Fernando deserves that. I'm sure both sets of supporters will pay their respects.

'We ask the supporters to get right behind the team because I think it would be a nice tribute to him if we can put in a good performance and try to get maximum points.

'I think everyone knows before a ball is kicked, if that was the case, we'd certainly dedicate it to him and his family.

'It's very sad. I'm sure the supporters are very sad at this time and we who are responsible for tomorrow night's performance want to do everything we can to try and get a win and dedicate it to him.'
