Here are your Manchester United morning headlines on Tuesday, December 20.

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has outlined his pride at the France squad following a gut-wrenching World Cup final defeat to Argentina on Sunday afternoon.

In a truly memorable showpiece, Argentina captain Lionel Messi (2) and France sensation Kylian Mbappe (3) traded blows at the Lusail Stadium as the two sides had to be separated by a shootout. At that stage, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez took centre stage for the South Americans with one telling save.

France midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni also missed the target. It brought agony for Varane and Les Bleus while his United defensive partner, Lisandro Martinez, celebrated an iconic victory for Argentina as they claimed the biggest trophy on the planet for a third time.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar sent a message of congratulations to Reds defender Lisandro Martinez after Argentina won the 2022 World Cup final.

Martinez was an unused substitute as the South American side defeated France 4-2 on penalties, with the game having finished 3-3 after extra-time. Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi scored twice in the match, while former United winger Angel Di Maria grabbed the other.

Messi's club teammate Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick in the final, but the reigning World Cup champions only managed to score two penalties in the shootout. The Frenchman's trio of goals was the first in a final since Sir Geoff Hurst in 1966.
