Marcus Rashford and Aaron Ramsdale are expected to come up against each other when Newcastle host Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has previously spoken about the ‘humility’ shown by Marcus Rashford, with the two England internationals set to do battle once again. The duo will be looking to get one better than each other when Barcelona visit St James’ Park in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Injury to Nick Pope means that Ramsdale is expected to retain his place in goal for the match, as both teams look to take an advantage into the second leg at the Nou Camp next week. He will be hoping to stop Rashford repeating the brace he scored in the meeting between the two sides in the group stages of the tournament.

It’s not the first time that the two Englishmen have come up against each other, with several meetings coming in the Premier League during Rashford’s time at Manchester United. Back in December 2020, he netted twice in a 3-2 win over Sheffield United.

Ahead of the reverse fixtures just a couple of months later, Ramsdale opened up on a gesture from the striker that helped him shape a clear opinion of him.

Speaking back in early 2021, Ramsdale, then with the Blades, told the Yorkshire Post: “With the game against Man United in December, me and Marcus had a conversation at the end and spoke about my family and his and what he is doing for the country.

“To be honest, me and Marcus do not know each other too well, so for him to ask about my mum and dad was a lovely gesture and one you can take something from even though he is an opponent – and he scored two past me.

“His humility shone through.”

The two may have had a chance to get to know each other a bit better since then, with them both included in the squad for the European Championships the following summer.

The tournament saw the Three Lions reach the final, where they lost on penalties to Italy.

Since then, Ramsdale has spent time with Arsenal and Southampton before joining Newcastle on loan in the summer. Rashford remained with United until last January, when he joined Aston Villa on loan.

He then joined Barcelona on another loan deal back in the summer, and the Manchester United academy graduate is expected to make the move a permanent one in the next transfer window.
