Cardiff secured promotion back to the Championship with a 3-1 win over Reading.
It seemed the Bluebirds were going to be made to wait but a remarkable 96th-minute equaliser from Exeter goalkeeper Jack Bycroft against Stockport clinched a 3-3 draw to send Cardiff up.
Rubin Colwill, Omari Kellyman and Perry Ng were on target in Cardiff's win at Reading, putting them on 85 points in second place, 11 points ahead of third-placed Bolton.
Cardiff were relegated from the Championship last season but return to the second tier at the first time of asking.
