Record Deadline Day spending – but will it be enough for these Premier League clubs?

It sums up a wild Transfer Deadline Day that the British transfer record was matched in the final hours of the window. Enzo Fernandez's move from Chelsea to Manchester City completed an extraordinary summer in which spending went stratospheric.

Premier League clubs spent more on players than in any transfer window in the sport's history. City's spending reached £440m but they brought in £315m. Chelsea spent £342m and brought in even more. Money flowing in and out at unprecedented levels.

Fernandez embodies the escalation in microcosm. Three-and-a-half years ago, his signing for £106.8m was held up as an example of excess. Now, Chelsea have a profit. Ditto Liam Delap. Maybe the signings of this summer will be the bargains of tomorrow.

And it was not just one or two clubs. The scale and depth was staggering. Even beyond the record-breaking deals, Liverpool added goalkeeper-for-the-future Lucca Brughmans for a fee that could rise to £30m. This would match Borussia Dortmund's record signing.

Brentford made a £40m signing, Brighton went as high as £50m. Had Coventry City signed their players in a particular order this summer then they could have broken their transfer record on five separate occasions. Ipswich Town signed a World Cup winner.

Fulham paid £34m for a Real Madrid striker. Tottenham's spending topped £300m. Aston Villa hit similar numbers while completely rebuilding their squad. That mood of renewal most conspicuous at Villa Park was a theme of the Premier League summer.

So many teams are in flux, underlined by the fact that Roberto De Zerbi is one of only nine coaches who took charge of their current club in the Premier League last season - and he did not arrive at Spurs until the end of March. Squads are being reshaped.

It explains some of what we have seen. Oliver Glasner linking up with Daniel Munoz again at Nottingham Forest. Pierre Sage trying, but failing, to persuade former player Malick Fofana to ditch Sunderland for Crystal Palace in one of the more colourful tales.

Fernandez's own reunion with Enzo Maresca did come off, sparking a late flurry of excitement in the window as Chelsea sought to replace the midfielder. The number of moving parts throughout this transfer window was a feature of the drama in the final days.

Wingers were a focus. Bradley Barcola was the biggest signing of the summer - for a day. Spurs were linked with Iliman Ndiaye but Man City swooped. They pivoted to Mykhailo Mudryk. Leeds had to move on, opting for Jean-Matteo Bahoya instead.

Newcastle signed Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille in a move that was confirmed at the relatively civilised hour of 3pm in the afternoon. Routine by Transfer Deadline Day standards. The French club had already sold Ayyoub Bouaddi to Man City for £81.3m.

Those selling clubs can seem like unlikely kingmakers in key moments. Monaco could knock back Chelsea's bids for Lamine Camara in the knowledge that Folarin Balogun was being sold to Everton. When that move stalled, Chelsea's hopes were reignited.

Cue the unexpected twist, an essential element of any classic Transfer Deadline Day. Chelsea were left frustrated as Monaco pulled out of the Camara deal. Everyone else wondering why it is that these multi-million moves have to go down to the wire.

Dashed ambitions and deal sheets, options and obligations, the moves that came off and those that did not. Once the dust settles, one wonders whether some will be uncertain that they have done enough. Others might even have buyer's remorse.

Will any of it work? Manchester City have broken the British transfer record only twice, for Steve Daley in 1979 and Robinho in 2008. The two men mustered 18 league goals for the club between them. Spending guarantees an impact on the accounts not the pitch.

And while the buzz that buying brings is a proven psychological phenomenon, the striking thing about this summer's spree is that so many supporters emerge from it still underwhelmed. However much money is committed, for some, it never feels enough.

Liverpool are still without a fit specialist right-back and with doubts over their midfield balance. Manchester United were unable to acquire the left-back that many regarded as essential. Even Arsenal fans are mumbling about being short up front.

Any answers now must be found on the pitch not in the market. With apologies to Tottenham, the onus is back on winning football matches not transfer windows. But never fear because the countdown is on. We get to do it all over again in January…
