Recovering Liverpool fan Sean Cox was present as a Reds' legends side took on storied names from the Republic of Ireland in a rehabilitation fundraising match for the Irishman.

Cox was left severely injured after being attacked by a Roma supporter prior to a Champions League semi-final first-leg clash last season, in April 2018.

Cox, 54, from Dunboyne in County Meath, was left in a critical condition after the unprovoked attack and spent many months in hospital while fighting to regain health.

He was left with brain injuries as a result, though has recovered to a stage where he can communicate with family and friends and was able to send a thank you message to Liverpool supporters this week.

An online fundraiser has been running since the attack and has seen donations from the likes of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Everton's Seamus Coleman.

The Liverpool versus Ireland showdown was penciled in to take place at Dublin's Aviva Stadium, with Cox and his family present.

The father-of-three is currently being cared for on a daily basis in Ireland's National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire near Dublin.

Liverpool took the spoils in the Irish capital, defeating their German counterparts by a 2-1 scoreline.

The Reds fielded a decorated side including a series of club icons including Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler and John Aldridge.

Ireland boasted the talent of former Reds Jason McAteer and Robbie Keane, who featured for both sides during the charity clash.

Goals from Vladmir Smicer and an Aldridge penalty were enough to seal a 2-1 win for the Reds in Dublin, despite Ireland having taken the lead through Keith Andrews.
