Referee confirmed for Man City vs Aston Villa in EFL Cup final

Lee Mason will lead Manchester City and Aston Villa out at Wembley for the 2020 Carabao Cup final.

Mason has been confirmed to referee his first major final, where City will be looking to win the Carabao Cup for the third successive season.

City booked their place in the final with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Manchester United, with Aston Villa overcoming Leicester in the other semi-final. If City were to win, it would be their eighth domestic trophy from the last nine available under Pep Guardiola.

Ian Hussin and Harry Lennard will be Mason's assistants, with David Coote the fourth official. Mike Dean and assistant Neil Davies will be in the VAR control room.

Mason has previously refereed the 2006 League One play-off final and 2014 Championship play-off final.

He has taken charge of four City games this season - the Premier League wins against Southampton at the Etihad and Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, as well as the Carabao Cup third round win at Preston and FA Cup third round victory over Port Vale.

In total, Mason has officiated 28 games involving City, which have resulted in 21 wins and two draws for City and just five defeats. In those games, he has brandished three red cards - to Richard Dunne against Wigan in 2009, to Vincent Kompany at Hull in 2014, and to Fernandinho in the win over Burnley in 2017.

City have not lost a game refereed by Mason since 2014, a run of 13 games.
