Gareth Bale scored the winner from a Sergio Reguilon cross to hand Tottenham a 2-1 win and a vital three points against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday night.
The Welshman had only been on the field some 200 seconds, coming on as a substitute for Erik Lamela, before he popped up with a powerful header to hand Spurs their first home win of the Premier League season.
Spurs looked on course for a comfortable evening when Harry Kane earned and scored a penalty on 13 minutes, but as recent capitulations against West Ham United and Newcastle United proved, the visitors would go onto provoke more than a few scares for Jose Mourinho and his side.
Brighton managed to keep Spurs at bay for the rest of the first period, and emerged stronger after the restart, which would be rewarded with a leveller, albeit in controversial circumstances.
Tariq Lamptey continued his excellent start to the campaign with a fine finish beyond Hugo Lloris, although Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg looked to be fouled in the build up after a strong challenge from Sully March. Despite VAR's suggestion to the referee to take a closer look, the goal was eventually awarded.
Mourinho looked to his bench for the solution and up stepped Gareth Bale. Just four minutes after coming on, the Welshman found himself unmarked in the Brighton penalty area and Reguilon picked him out with a fine right-footed cross.
Bale guided the cross into the far corner of the net with a strong header, far beyond the keeper's reach, to get Spurs ahead once again.
It was a tense finish once again for the hosts, but this time they held on for a valuable win that pushes them up to second in the table.

Every year Tottenham always seems promising and then comes a time when they start loosing matches and then before you discover they are 6th or 5th. Sometimes it just looks like a curse. How can a team play the way the play and can't really achieve a trophy. In my own point of view, they can't handle pressure in decisive games. And they lack those players who can be bold enough to turn a situation around in a tough tie.
Im both spurs and liverpool fan and I'm definitely on ur side for this one. But I feel like we might have a chance to win something this season and having Mourinho it does help

the only time we finished "5th or 6th" as of recent times is last year, and we were not promising at all last year so what are you on about
